Suspect and victim 'known to each other' after Plymouth wheelie-bin killing

A man in his 30s remains in police custody on suspicion of murder after a victim was discovered seriously injured and partially inside a wheelie bin in Plymouth, plymouthherald.co.uk reports.

The victim, a man in his 50s, was found at around 6.40am on Wednesday, 21 October, in a service lane off Grand Parade in the West Hoe area. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed. The deceased has not yet been formally identified.

The man was found with stab wounds "partially within a wheelie bin", according to police. A suspect was subsequently arrested and, on Friday, Plymouth Magistrates Court granted officers a warrant of further detention for 36 hours to allow questioning to continue.

Detective Inspector Chris Lithgow said investigators believe the two men were acquainted. "The suspect and victim are believed to be known to each other and we are keeping an open mind as to any motive," he said.

Lithgow described a large-scale operation under way in the area. "A significant number of witness, CCTV, house-to-house and search enquiries are taking place," he said. "Every effort is being made to establish the circumstances surrounding this death."

He added that officers are asking the public to refrain from sharing unconfirmed information online. "We are asking members of the public to help our investigation by avoiding speculation," Lithgow said.

Anyone with relevant information, images or footage is asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police through the force's major incident public portal, by telephone on 101, or via the force website quoting reference 50260282293.
