Masked youths attack officers in Derry, PSNI launches investigation

Two police vehicles were damaged after masked and armed young people threw stones and bottles at officers during an ongoing policing operation in the Creevagh Heights area of Londonderry on Friday night, bbc.co.uk reports.

No injuries were recorded, and crowds had dispersed by approximately 23:30 BST.

Superintendent Claire Hamilton confirmed that an investigation has been launched. "Evidence gathered last night will be reviewed in order to identify those involved," she said.

Hamilton described the behaviour as "completely unacceptable", adding that attacking officers while they carry out duties to protect the public is not welcomed by the wider community.

She said engagement with local representatives around the issues is ongoing. "Our officers continually put themselves in harm's way to protect the community," Hamilton added.
