Youths hurl stones and bottles at PSNI officers in Derry
Two police vehicles were damaged after officers were attacked by a group of youths in the Creevagh Heights area of Derry, RTÉ News reports.
A PSNI spokesperson said officers had "come under attack" from a number of youths while carrying out an ongoing policing operation in the area. The Creevagh Road, country-bound, was closed during the disorder.
PSNI Superintendent Claire Hamilton said some of those involved were wearing masks, and that others were armed with weapons, carrying tins of paint or fireworks. Stones and bottles were thrown at officers, causing damage to two police vehicles.
"This is completely unacceptable behaviour – attacking officers while they're performing duties to protect the public – and we know it is not welcomed by the wider community," Hamilton said.
She confirmed that a public safety operation remained in place following the incidents and appealed to those involved to stand down.
"We would appeal to those engaging in this behaviour to refrain from doing so as our policing operation continues," she said. "Our officers are also engaging with local community reps this evening and we would reiterate our appeal for calm."
