Fatal blaze in Grangetown leaves two dead, two men held on murder suspicion

Two people died and a 48-year-old woman was left in a critical condition after a house fire in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough, broke out shortly before 05:30 BST, guyanachronicle.com reports. Three further people sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Cleveland Police confirmed that two men, aged 23 and 31, were arrested on suspicion of murder and remained in custody. The force said the two victims had not yet been formally identified.

Officers stated they were "keeping an open mind and cannot rule out any links to wider organised crime at this time."

Redcar and Cleveland Local Policing Commander Superintendent Emily Harrison said the force was working to "establish the circumstances of exactly what has happened." She added that a high-visibility police presence would be maintained in the Grangetown area and encouraged anyone with information to approach officers. Patrols in the area had been increased to reassure the local community.

A 20-year-old neighbour, Ellie, described how residents had attempted to rescue those inside. "The entire house was scorching," she said. "I couldn't get near the front of the house, it was that hot." She recounted holding the hand of a woman who had jumped from an upstairs window, remaining with her until paramedics arrived.

Another neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: "My daughter heard shouting and screaming this morning. The dogs were barking."

Cleveland Fire Brigade deployed six fire engines and the Incident Command Unit. The fire was confirmed extinguished at 13:30 BST, though one engine remained on standby. Road closures were put in place, and the public was asked to avoid the area. The incident is being jointly investigated by the fire service and Cleveland Police.

Redcar MP Anna Turley said the community had faced a "profound amount of heartbreak over the past few weeks." She said she was "devastated to hear of the tragic loss of life" and extended condolences to the families and friends of those who died, as well as those receiving treatment.

Grangetown councillor Adam Brook urged residents not to speculate or share unconfirmed information, noting that many had been in contact with him throughout the morning. Specialist officers are supporting the families of those involved.

The fire occurred approximately two miles from the A66 road crash that killed five young men and two police officers the same Saturday morning.
