Shetland police officer guilty of four sex offences spanning nearly a decade
A serving police constable has been convicted of raping a teenage girl and an adult woman following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, The Sun reports.
Carmichael John Williamson, 32, known as John, was found guilty on three charges of rape and one charge of having sex with a person under the age of 16. The offences took place across multiple locations in Shetland between 2014 and 2022.
A jury returned the guilty verdicts on all four counts jurors were asked to consider. Williamson had denied each of the offences throughout the proceedings.
The court heard that Williamson had sex with a 15-year-old girl at locations in Shetland in 2014. He was also found guilty of raping the same girl on one occasion between April 2014 and October 2015. In addition, he was convicted of raping an adult woman on two separate occasions in Shetland in 2020 and 2022.
Williamson, who had served as a police constable for more than ten years, was visibly upset as he was led from the dock in handcuffs. He had been on bail throughout the court proceedings, but Judge John Morris KC ordered that he be remanded in custody while a background report is prepared ahead of sentencing.
Judge Morris described it as a "very distressing and anxious" case and informed jurors that counselling was available to them should they require it.
Williamson has been placed on the sex offenders' register.
