Coast Guard Officer Killed After Roadside Confrontation in Bryn Mawr-Skyway
A 29-year-old U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant was fatally shot during an early-morning e-scooter ride near Seattle, according to Law & Crime, which reviewed King County court records in the case.
Connor Overstreet was riding Lime e-scooters with two friends at around 1 a.m. on Aug. 23, in the area of South 124th Street and South Langston Road in Bryn Mawr-Skyway, Washington — an unincorporated area just south of Seattle. A Toyota Prius passed the group, and words were exchanged between those inside the vehicle and Overstreet.
The car initially drove on but then stopped. As Overstreet approached the passenger side of the Prius, he was shot in the chest. The vehicle fled the scene. Emergency responders arrived but Overstreet was pronounced dead at the scene.
Isaiah Bolar, 18, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the killing. Authorities say Bolar either fired the shot himself or encouraged and assisted someone else to do so. Bolar also faces a charge of attempting to elude a police vehicle.
Two days after the shooting, on Aug. 25, officers in Kent, Washington — roughly 10 miles south of Skyway — spotted a Prius. A passenger exited the vehicle, carrying a backpack, and threw it into a trash can. Police arrested Bolar and interviewed the passenger, who told investigators that Bolar handed him the bag and said, "Take this." Inside the bag, officers found a Ruger .357 revolver alleged to be the weapon used in the shooting.
Cell phone data further placed Bolar at the scene: investigators determined his phone was in the area of the shooting at the time of the incident and subsequently tracked the same route taken by the Prius.
Bolar is expected to appear in court next week.
