Two dead after gunfire erupts at Northridge strip mall party

Two people were shot dead during an open mic night at a strip mall near California State University, Northridge, late Friday, abc7.com reports. Los Angeles police said officers responded to reports of a large party just after 11 p.m. and asked organisers to shut it down — moments later, gunshots rang out.

The two victims, a man and a woman both aged between 18 and 25, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities had not been released as of Saturday morning. A third person was believed to have fled the venue after sustaining a gunshot wound; investigators were still working to locate that individual.

Cell phone footage recorded inside the Artist Lounge — a venue on the second floor of the strip mall near Nordhoff Street and Reseda Boulevard — shows the crowd dancing before panic broke out. A bystander is audible on the video shouting: "Everybody leave! Everybody leave!"

One witness, who declined to be named publicly, described the sequence of events: "It all happened so fast. This guy pulls out a gun from his waist and goes at one person, boom. Then he turns around to get another guy, but he totally missed it and got somebody else in the back."

LAPD's AIR7 helicopter was deployed over the scene, alongside firefighters and multiple police cruisers. Dozens of individuals were brought out of the venue with their hands bound by handcuffs or zip ties and lined up for questioning as detectives conducted their investigation.

The shooter fled before officers could make an arrest. No suspect description was immediately available.
