Alabama lawmaker and school board president face felony trafficking charges after undercover operation
An Alabama state representative and a school board president have been arrested on felony human trafficking charges following a multi-agency undercover operation in Escambia County, wiregrassdailynews.com reports.
State Rep. Brett Easterbrook and Satsuma City School Board President Kory Wesley were booked into the Escambia County Detention Center on Friday, 2 October, according to Escambia County Sheriff Heath Jackson and jail records.
Easterbrook faces charges of first-degree human trafficking and prostitution. Wesley is charged with first-degree human trafficking and attempting to elude a police officer.
Easterbrook, a Republican from Fruitdale, represents Alabama House District 65. Legislative records show he has served in the Alabama House since 2018.
Wesley held the position of president of the Satsuma City School Board, the five-member body responsible for overseeing the Satsuma City School System.
The school system issued a statement following Wesley's arrest. "We are mindful of how this affects families, employees, students, and members of our community, who are not involved in the allegations," the statement read. "The school system will respect the legal process and will not comment on the matter at this time."
Sheriff Jackson indicated that additional details about the undercover operation are expected to be released in the coming days.
Both men were released after being booked. No court dates had been announced as of Saturday.
The charges are allegations. Easterbrook and Wesley are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
