Man shot by officer after pointing gun at police during CVS robbery attempt

A 65-year-old man was shot by a police officer after pointing a firearm at law enforcement during an attempted robbery at a CVS Pharmacy in Gloucester Township, Camden County, according to nbcphiladelphia.com.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Friday, 6 November, at the CVS store on the 700 block of College Drive. Officers were dispatched to the location following reports of a robbery in progress.

Upon arrival, officers identified the suspect as Michael Dougherty, 65, who was armed with a gun and in the process of attempting to rob the pharmacy. At one point, Dougherty pointed the weapon directly at one of the responding officers, who moved to cover before drawing his own firearm.

The officer issued multiple commands for Dougherty to drop his weapon. Rather than complying, Dougherty advanced toward the officer. The officer then discharged his weapon multiple times, striking Dougherty.

A second officer placed Dougherty under arrest. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries. None of the officers involved sustained injuries during the incident.

Two weapons were recovered from Dougherty at the scene, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Dougherty faces charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault by pointing a firearm at a law enforcement officer, and additional related offences.
