Officials named the detained individual as Jasmaine Smoak, who is now being held at a correctional facility in Wilkes County. The case began when law enforcement in Atlanta received a request to check on someone's wellbeing at a private residential complex along Cardinal Drive SW on Monday night.
Based on details gathered while conducting that visit, personnel made a forced entry into the dwelling. Upon gaining access, they encountered the toddler lifeless. Medics on the scene performed resuscitation attempts, yet the youth could not be saved.
The local sheriff, Darrell Powers, explained that his team partnered with murder investigators from Atlanta. Through the use of automated tag recognition tools, they pinpointed Smoak's location.
Prosecutors have lodged counts against her for mistreating a minor under the statute's second tier, as well as for covering up another person's fatality. Detectives revealed that the accused knows the youngster's mother. What precisely caused the fatality is still unknown.
