Murder charge filed after fatal shooting near Holyoke youth centre

Craig Jones appeared in a Holyoke court on Tuesday to face a first-degree murder charge stemming from a deadly weekend shooting near a local Boys and Girls Club, westernmassnews.com reports.

Jones faces four charges in total: first-degree murder, carrying a firearm without a licence, carrying a loaded firearm without a licence, and discharging a weapon within 500 feet of a building. He pleaded not guilty to all counts and was ordered held without bail.

Witnesses told investigators the shooting unfolded outside the venue while children were attending a Western Massachusetts High School girls basketball fall league game. When someone shouted "active shooter", the Boys and Girls Club went into lockdown and children took cover beneath the bleachers.

The Hampden District Attorney's office is leading the investigation into the incident.
