Dayton school bus driver charged after hit-and-run leaves child severely injured

A 70-year-old school bus driver was arrested Friday after a child sustained severe injuries in a hit-and-run crash on US Highway 90 in Dayton, Texas, abc13.com reports.

Dayton Police Department officers responded to the intersection of US-90 and Stilson Road at approximately 6:30 a.m. following reports of a crash. Investigators determined that a school bus struck the child and that the driver failed to stop and render aid.

Authorities identified the arrested driver as Ricky Eugene Cherry, a Dayton Independent School District employee. Cherry was taken into custody around 6 p.m. and charged with collision causing serious bodily injury, according to jail records.

Police did not disclose whether the child was a student, or whether the incident occurred while the child was boarding or disembarking the bus. The investigation remains ongoing.

Dayton ISD Superintendent Dr. Travis Young issued a statement Friday: "Our hearts and prayers are with the student and their family as they navigate this difficult time. We recognise the concern this incident has brought to our school community, and we remain committed to providing support while respecting the privacy of those involved."
