A former senior Central Intelligence Agency official has pleaded guilty to defrauding the United States government of approximately $193.6 million. David J. Rush, 49, entered his plea on 6 October 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice announced, as reported by Lawnet.

Rush occupied a high-level position that granted him access to top-secret materials. He used counterfeit service authorizations, among them a bogus special-access program, to divert federal money for personal enrichment. The stolen funds were channeled into gold bars, luxury real estate, expensive timepieces, and automobiles.

On 19 May 2026, the Federal Bureau of Investigation searched his home and found 298 gold bars, about $2.1 million in cash, and €104,795 in currency. Under the plea agreement, Rush agreed to asset forfeiture.

The CIA uncovered the misconduct during an internal audit and referred the matter to the FBI. The Justice Department’s investigation is still ongoing.

Rush is scheduled to be sentenced on 28 January 2027. He faces up to 20 years in federal prison, as well as restitution and financial penalties. The court will set the final sentence.
