Fairmont man charged with attempted murder after throat attack on former partner

A 50-year-old man from Fairmont, West Virginia, has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly slashing a woman's throat with a bread knife, wcax.com reports.

Benjamin Mayfield was arrested after the victim came to a home on 14th Street — a property she had previously shared with Mayfield — to collect her belongings. The visit, which took place on Sunday, escalated into an argument.

According to court documents cited by wcax.com, Mayfield retrieved a bread knife from a box inside the home, placed the victim in a chokehold, and cut her throat with the blade. The woman sustained a severe laceration to her throat but managed to escape.

She was transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital, where medical staff also treated multiple lacerations on her left hand, injuries consistent with attempts to defend herself, court documents state.

Mayfield is currently held at the North Central Regional Jail. Bond has been set at $1 million.

The charge was filed by the Fairmont Police Department.
