Georgia police are investigating the deaths of five people, all adult family members, following an apparent murder-suicide at a rural home on the outskirts of Douglas — a small city roughly 200 miles southeast of Atlanta — late on Friday night, wsbtv.com reports.

Douglas Police Chief Brannen Pruette confirmed the findings at a news conference on Saturday. "Investigators believe this was an apparent murder-suicide involving immediate family members who reside in the home," Pruette said.

Officers were dispatched to the property shortly after 11 p.m. following an emergency call made by one of the victims. Upon arrival, they found a woman alive at the scene. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, bringing the total death toll to five — four victims and the shooter, who died by suicide.

Earlier on Friday, police said the same woman had placed a separate emergency call summoning officers to the house. "It's my understanding the call was placed by the wife, the female victim. She called, and was complaining about the husband who was in the house smoking and she said he was killing her with the smoke," Pruette said.

Douglas Police had not responded to requests for further information at the time of publication.

The incident comes a week after a separate shooting in Vienna, another small Georgia city approximately an hour north of Douglas, in which two people were killed and 35 injured during a block party celebrating a high-school football game.
