Former 'American Idol' contestant found guilty of wife's murder in Tipp City

A former Ohio music pastor who appeared on "American Idol" in 2013 has been convicted of murdering his wife while conducting an extramarital affair, abc7news.com reports. Caleb Flynn, 40, was found guilty Tuesday on charges of murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence.

Prosecutors argued that Flynn shot his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37, a schoolteacher and volleyball coach, at their home in Tipp City — a suburb north of Dayton — in February, then staged a home invasion to conceal the killing. Flynn and the couple's two daughters were present when police arrived.

Flynn faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Sentencing is scheduled for Monday.

As the judge read the verdicts, Flynn closed his eyes, shook his head and struggled to maintain his composure. He began sobbing when the jury was dismissed.

Affair and motive

Assistant Miami County prosecutor Matthew Joseph told jurors that Flynn had clear reasons to want his wife dead. "He wanted to keep his mistress and have his daughters all to himself," Joseph said. Prosecutors also argued Flynn did not want to lose his high-paying position at his wife's family business or his standing in the church.

Alleigha Botner testified that she met Flynn in 2022 when she was a 20-year-old intern at his church. The pair had an affair for more than a year. During the trial, Botner read aloud text messages exchanged with Flynn. In one message, sent approximately six months before Ashley Flynn's death, Flynn wrote: "I was up until 4 a.m. last night crying, literally trying to think of ways to kill her and not go to jail."

A separate woman who testified said Flynn told her he hated his wife and had thoughts of killing her.

Defence arguments

Defence attorney Patrick Mulligan maintained that investigators never recovered a gun or any forensic evidence that Flynn had fired a weapon that day. He urged jurors not to conflate marital infidelity with criminal guilt. "His being unfaithful doesn't equal murder," Mulligan told the jury. "The issue here isn't, 'Was he a good husband?'" Mulligan also argued that Flynn's text messages complaining about his wife were intended to make his lover feel good rather than express genuine intent.

'American Idol' appearance

Flynn appeared on "American Idol" in 2013, performing before judges Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson and Nicki Minaj. He did not advance to the Hollywood round of the competition. During his appearance, he spoke publicly about how Ashley had encouraged him to pursue his dreams on the show.
