An 18-year-old man was arrested Friday evening after firing a gun on W. Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, according to wral.com. Officers responded to the 100 block of the street at around 7 p.m.
The suspect, identified as Axel Zizumbo, faces charges of concealed carry of a weapon violation, discharging a firearm within town limits, and armed to the terror of the public.
Numerous students were present on the street at the time, witnesses told WRAL. Hannah Mackin, a senior at the University of North Carolina, said she was outside a nearby restaurant when she heard the shots.
"Everyone started screaming," Mackin said. "We run into [the restaurant] ... the entire place is just people screaming and hiding out. Eventually we go out and it's flooded with cops."
Mackin said she received a notification from Alert Carolina — UNC's emergency alert system — at approximately 9 p.m.
Police confirmed there were no reports of injuries and said there is no ongoing threat to the community. The investigation remains ongoing.
