ICE Officer Charged After Man Run Over in Houston

A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer has been indicted on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following an incident in Houston, Texas, earlier this month, the Jamaica Observer reports.

Mario Alberto Morales, 33, was indicted by a Texas grand jury on Friday — reportedly the first such indictment of an ICE officer in the state.

Morales allegedly ran over Miguel Parra Hernandez, who was on foot at the time. Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare played a newly released body-camera recording during a press briefing that showed the officer yanking his steering wheel, followed seconds later by a loud impact. The footage then showed Hernandez face-down on the pavement.

"The evidence that we have in this case is as clear as any that I've ever prosecuted or investigated," Teare was quoted as saying by NBC News.

An ICE spokesperson issued a statement disputing the account, saying Hernandez had run in front of the vehicle before being struck.
