Boise daycare worker charged with harming four infants at New Horizon Academy
An 18-year-old childcare worker has been arrested on four felony counts of Injury to Child following an investigation into incidents at a Boise daycare centre, cityofboise.org reports.
Maria "Mia" Ackerman, of Boise, was booked into the Ada County Jail on 29 October 2026, three days after the initial incident was recorded at New Horizon Academy, located at 155 E Boise Ave.
Referral triggers investigation
Boise Police Special Victims Unit detectives opened the case on 27 October 2026, after receiving a referral from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare concerning a reported injury to a child. The incident itself had taken place the previous day, on 26 October.
The first identified victim, an infant, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Through the subsequent investigation, however, detectives found evidence that Ackerman's conduct toward that infant — and toward three additional infants at the same facility — could have caused great bodily harm or death.
Four counts, four victims
Ackerman faces one felony charge for each of the four infants. Parents of the three additional victims have been notified, and medical attention was being sought for those children at the time of the news release. An update on the full extent of injuries was not available when cityofboise.org published its statement.
Boise Police said the investigation is continuing to determine whether any other children at the centre were harmed.
Facility cooperates; suspect removed immediately
New Horizon Academy is cooperating with detectives, according to Boise Police. On the same day the incident occurred — 26 October 2026 — Ackerman was sent home from the facility and was not permitted to return.
Ackerman had begun working at New Horizon Academy in March or April 2026, meaning she had been employed at the centre for approximately six months before the reported incident.
