Multiple Madera Police officers shot and killed a man on Sunday after he emerged from a home holding what turned out to be a replica firearm.

A man is dead after multiple Madera Police officers opened fire on him during a midday incident on Sunday, abc30.com reports.

According to Madera Police Chief Giachino Chiaramonte, officers received a call around noon regarding a man behaving erratically at a residence in the area of Kennedy Street, near Lake Street. The man had reportedly been flooding and damaging the home.

At least three officers responded to the scene. Upon arrival, the man had locked himself inside a room. Family members present were able to exit the property safely.

Chief Chiaramonte said officers determined no major crime had taken place and their intention was to disengage from the situation. As they were preparing to leave, however, the man came out of the home holding what appeared to be a firearm. More than one officer discharged their weapon.

Medical aid was administered immediately at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead.

Investigators from the Madera County Sheriff's Office, which subsequently took over the investigation, later determined the man had been carrying a replica gun.

The victim has not been identified. Chief Chiaramonte described him only as a man who was permitted to live at the residence.

The officers who fired have been placed on administrative leave. No officers sustained injuries during the incident.

The case will be referred to the California Department of Justice under California Assembly Bill 1506, which mandates that the DOJ investigate all officer-involved shootings resulting in the death of an unarmed person.

Residents in the surrounding area were urged to avoid the scene, as the investigation was expected to continue for at least six to eight hours.
