A man is in hospital in stable condition after two Citrus Heights police officers shot him on Fulton Avenue in Arden Arcade on Thursday, according to sacbee.com, which reviewed bystander video and law enforcement dispatch audio from the incident.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office announced shortly after 1 p.m. that it was investigating the officer-involved shooting near the junction of Fulton Avenue and Michelle Drive. Sheriff's deputies, Citrus Heights Police Department officers, and California Highway Patrol units were all present at the scene.

Sgt. Edward Igoe, a sheriff's spokesperson, said the incident began shortly before noon along the Capital City Freeway, when a CHP officer pulled over a white pickup truck bearing Oklahoma licence plates for a traffic violation. During that stop, the suspect produced a knife. The CHP officer held the suspect at gunpoint, but the suspect returned to the vehicle and drove off, prompting the officer to initiate a pursuit.

The chase moved east onto Interstate 80 before turning south on Fulton Avenue, where Citrus Heights police joined. At that stage, two CHP vehicles and one Citrus Heights vehicle were following the suspect.

The suspect eventually stopped on Fulton Avenue, got out of the vehicle, and began pacing in front of it with a knife in his hand, Igoe said. A sheriff's deputy arrived and deployed a less-than-lethal shotgun to assist officers confronting the man.

Bystander video reviewed by sacbee.com shows a man in a black hooded sweatshirt near the stationary white pickup as officers stood several feet away with their weapons drawn. One officer can be heard saying, "Drop the knife, I don't want to kill you."

The suspect then ran toward the officers. Igoe said the two Citrus Heights officers fired their department-issued weapons, striking the man. The sheriff's deputy simultaneously discharged one less-than-lethal round, which also struck the suspect. Investigators subsequently recovered a knife at the scene. No law enforcement personnel were injured.

The suspect was taken by ambulance to hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, the Sheriff's Office confirmed.

Roads in the surrounding area were closed following the shooting, including a section of Fulton Avenue near the scene. Authorities warned drivers to expect significant traffic delays.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation into the shooting. The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office was also present at the scene conducting an independent review.
