Former NBA guard J.R. Smith was arrested in Texas on Monday on a family violence assault charge, tmz.com reports. Officers pulled him over after an automatic licence plate reader flagged his vehicle and alerted them to an active warrant.

Smith was taken into custody and booked into the Hunt County Detention Center on a charge of assault causing bodily injury — family violence, according to jail records. His brother, who was travelling with him, took possession of the vehicle. As of the time of reporting, no bond had been set.

Smith played 16 seasons in the NBA, winning championships with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020 before retiring. Following his playing career, he enrolled at North Carolina A&T State University, joined the golf team, and graduated in May 2026 with a bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies.

This is not his first encounter with the law. Smith previously served 24 days in jail after pleading guilty to reckless driving in connection with a 2007 crash that killed one of his passengers.
