Nine dead, including suspect, after Erie residential shooting
A mass shooting in a residential neighbourhood of Erie, Pennsylvania, killed nine people, including the suspected gunman, police have confirmed, according to irishexaminer.com. Two children and a pregnant woman were among those who died.
Officers reached the scene within minutes after receiving an alert through ShotSpotter, an AI-assisted gunshot detection system. All nine deaths had already occurred before police arrived, and no further shots were fired after their arrival.
The city of Erie issued a statement to address what it described as inaccurate information that had circulated following the Friday shooting. "Sounds heard during the police response that may have been mistaken for gunfire were flash bangs associated with law enforcement's tactical response," the statement read.
Police chief Rick Lorah said the incident was unlike anything he had witnessed in more than 28 years of service. "I'm not sure that the city of Erie has ever seen the loss of life and the devastation that we just witnessed," he told a local news station.
Authorities released few further details ahead of a news conference scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Governor Josh Shapiro said he had offered his administration's "full support" to Erie mayor Daria Devlin.
Erie is located approximately 120 miles north of Pittsburgh.
