Great-aunt charged with murder after toddler dies of blunt force trauma in Hamptonville

A 37-year-old woman from North Carolina has been charged with murder following the death of her 21-month-old great-niece, who was in her care at the time of the alleged assault, Law & Crime reports.

Stephanie Kay Johnson was taken into custody last week and faces one count of murder and one count of intentionally inflicting child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury. Authorities from the Yadkin County Sheriff's Office announced the charges following a months-long investigation.

The case began on April 30, when deputies and emergency medical personnel responded to a reported medical emergency at a home in the 5900 block of Bob's Lake Road in Hamptonville. First responders performed CPR at the scene before transporting the toddler to a local hospital.

While the child was receiving treatment, detectives from the sheriff's office identified evidence of earlier non-accidental trauma, according to WXII. The toddler subsequently died from her injuries.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy and ruled the manner of death a homicide, with blunt force trauma listed as the cause.

An arrest warrant issued October 8 outlines the specific allegations against Johnson. On the murder count, prosecutors allege she acted with "malice aforethought" — a legal standard referring to intent to kill or extreme disregard for human life. A separate count alleges she intentionally inflicted the injuries that led to the child's death.

"At the time the defendant inflicted the injury the defendant was providing care for the child as great aunt," the warrant states.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assisted the Yadkin County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigative Division throughout the case. The county Department of Social Services also opened a parallel investigation into Johnson following her great-niece's death.

Before Johnson's arrest was announced, WXII spoke with the victim's grandfather, who described the toddler as happy and full of love. The family had planned to hold a memorial service for the child.

Johnson was arrested without incident and is currently being held in the Yadkin County Jail without bond.
