Teen girl faces adult murder charges after fatal shooting in Brandon subdivision

A 14-year-old girl has been charged as an adult with murder and attempted murder following a fatal shooting inside a Brandon, Mississippi home, supertalk.fm reports. The victim, 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, was killed by an apparent gunshot wound; her husband survived after being shot in the shoulder.

The incident occurred on Ashton Way in the Farmington Station subdivision of Rankin County on Tuesday, just after 5 p.m., when police responded to a report of shots fired. Officers arriving at the scene found the stepfather with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He directed deputies to the body of his wife and told them his daughter — later identified as Carly Madison Gregg — had been inside the home holding a pistol and had fired at him.

Following a physical struggle in which he managed to disarm Gregg, the teenager fled the property and jumped over the backyard fence. Several agencies joined the search, including the Mississippi Highway Patrol and its helicopter. Gregg was located a short distance from the residence at approximately 5:35 p.m. and taken into custody without incident.

Gregg was subsequently transferred to the Rankin County Adult Detention Center. She appeared in court on Wednesday, entered a not guilty plea, and was held on a $1 million bond.

The city of Flowood, home to Northwest Rankin, released a statement addressing the incident: "Our deepest prayers and condolences are with our Northwest Rankin family during this difficult time. We love our Cougar family. You are not alone."
