Liberty County parents face murder charges over fatal RV blaze
Two parents from the Cleveland area in Liberty County, Texas, have each been charged with two counts of murder following a fire that killed their two toddlers, abc13.com reports.
The Liberty County Fire Marshal's Office identified the suspects as Matthew Allen Chambers, 39, and Meaghan Michelle Herrod, 30. Online jail records showed both remained in custody as of Sunday night, each held on a total bond of $1 million.
The fire broke out in August on a property along County Road 3819, near Highway 59 outside Cleveland. Emergency callers reported an RV fully engulfed in flames with people believed to be inside. Cleveland Fire Chief Sean Anderson said the camper had already begun to collapse by the time crews arrived, though firefighters still entered the structure.
Two young siblings were confirmed dead at the scene. The children's grandfather told abc13.com they were a 3-year-old boy and his 2-year-old sister.
The property housed several RVs and mobile homes where the family and friends of the children lived. At the time of the fire, officials said they were investigating the whereabouts of the parents when the blaze started.
"They were in the area of the fire at the time. That's part of the investigation. We're looking into that," Chief Anderson said.
ABC13 said it is continuing to seek further details from law enforcement regarding the circumstances that led to the murder charges being filed.
