A Beauregard Parish Sheriff's deputy has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide following a crash on Louisiana Highway 389 that killed two people, kplctv.com reports.
Louisiana State Police responded to the scene shortly after 9 p.m. on Friday. Investigators identified the driver as Dylan Havens, 26, who was travelling west on the highway when he rear-ended a vehicle carrying two passengers — a 52-year-old woman and a 51-year-old man, both from Sulphur.
Both vehicles left the road as a result of the collision. The passenger in the second car was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was transported to a local hospital, where they later died. Both victims were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Havens, also wearing a seatbelt, sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital. Troopers noted signs of impairment during their investigation, which led to his arrest. Upon discharge from hospital, Havens was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center on two counts of vehicular homicide, careless operation, and speeding.
Beauregard Parish Sheriff Mark Herford issued a statement expressing remorse over the incident. "It is with great sadness and disappointment that I have to inform the public that one of my deputies was involved in the fatal wreck last night," Herford said. "He was not on duty at the time, but my office has consistently tried to re-enforce with our deputies that they are held to a higher standard and should conduct themselves that way."
Herford extended condolences to those affected. "I want to express my deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of the victims. I cannot imagine the pain that they are experiencing."
The crash remains under investigation.
