Arizona surgeon detained at Miami cruise terminal with drugs hidden as confectionery
An orthopedic surgeon from Safford, Arizona was taken into custody last Tuesday at PortMiami after federal border agents discovered a cache of alleged narcotics in his luggage, foxchattanooga.com reports. Dr. Jacob Lee Henrichsen, 38, had been attempting to board a Norwegian Cruise Line vessel bound for Nassau in the Bahamas.
Agents operating under an outbound inspection initiative called "Operation Temptation 2026" flagged a Pelican case belonging to Henrichsen for secondary screening at Terminal B. After Henrichsen signed a customs declaration confirming ownership of all items in the case, officers searched the container and found contraband disguised as ordinary confectionery and vaping products.
According to an arrest affidavit cited by KSAZ, the following items were recovered:
- Approximately 12 grams of MDMA in the form of capsules, gummies and pills stamped with the Tesla logo
- Around 160 grams of mushroom edibles that tested positive for LSD properties
- More than 300 grams of THC gummies, vape oil and mints
Field tests conducted on site confirmed the presence of the controlled substances.
Homeland Security reviewed the case but concluded the total quantity of narcotics did not meet the threshold required for federal prosecution. Jurisdiction then passed to detectives from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, who formally arrested Henrichsen. He was transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correction Center and held on a $40,000 bond, according to WTVJ.
At a court hearing the following Wednesday, Henrichsen's attorney challenged the reported weights of the substances. "This isn't pure MDMA," the attorney stated. "These are gummies that are largely sugar and water. There are small quantities of MDMA inside of them."
Henrichsen is listed as a practitioner at Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center in Safford, Arizona. The hospital's vice president of marketing and community relations, Danny Smith, issued a statement to KSAZ acknowledging the arrest while declining to comment further.
"Be assured we will act responsibly as we learn more," Smith said. "The safety, privacy, and care of our patients remain our absolute highest priorities. Because this news is an allegation, as well as a confidential personnel matter, MGRMC cannot provide further comments or details at this time."
