New Jersey teacher admits sex abuse of student who fathered her child

A former elementary school teacher in New Jersey has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a pupil who was as young as 11 when the relationship began, nypost.com reports. Laura Caron, 36, entered her plea on 30 October on a charge of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child with sexual conduct, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland announced.

Under a plea agreement, Caron faces up to five years in state prison. She will also be required to surrender her teaching licence, forfeit eligibility for future public employment, register on the Megan's Law Offender Registry, and remain subject to parole supervision for the rest of her life.

Caron first encountered the boy, born in 2005, when she taught him and his brother in fifth grade at Middle Township Elementary School in Cape May Court House. The family subsequently maintained a close relationship with her, with the two brothers and their sister spending several nights a week at her home, according to reporting by the Daily Mail.

Prosecutors say the sexual relationship began when the boy was 11, in 2016, and continued until he was 15. Caron became pregnant when he was 13 and gave birth to a daughter in 2019.

The matter remained concealed for years. It came to light in December 2024 after the boy's father noticed a striking resemblance between Caron's child, himself, and his son in a photograph on Facebook. Investigators subsequently uncovered further allegations, including claims that the victim's brother once witnessed Caron sexually assaulting his sleeping sibling. The boy's sister also told authorities she had fallen asleep beside her brother only to wake and find him in Caron's bed, ABC6 reported.

The victim, now around 21 years old, has publicly defended Caron and maintains he initiated the relationship himself. "They need to drop all charges. I wasn't groomed or raped or manipulated by her. She never initiated anything," he told the Daily Mail. "I started everything. If it was up to me she wouldn't have been in jail."

Sutherland, addressing the broader context when charges were first filed in January 2025, said: "Teachers hold a position of great trust, and the allegations in this case represent a deeply troubling breach of that trust."

Caron, a former basketball player at Cabrini University in Pennsylvania, was originally charged on 15 January 2025 with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child. The guilty plea covers the reduced charge under the agreed terms.

Before sentencing, she will undergo an evaluation to determine whether her conduct is repetitive or compulsive, a finding that could influence the length of her sentence. Formal sentencing is scheduled for 8 January 2027.
