Pittsburgh paediatrician killed in home attack; wife critically injured

A Pittsburgh children's doctor was stabbed to death in his bed in the early hours of Thursday morning, with his wife sustaining critical injuries in the same attack, livenowfox.com reports.

Police responded to a home in Edgewood at around 12:30 a.m. after reports of two people stabbed. Officers found Dr. Idris Evans, 46, and his wife both with multiple stab wounds. The couple were taken to area hospitals, where Evans was later pronounced dead. His wife remained in critical condition as of Thursday.

Evans was a paediatric critical care doctor at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh, according to the university's website.

"The UPMC and University of Pittsburgh community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Dr. Idris Evans," a UPMC spokesperson said in a statement to Fox News Digital. "Dr. Evans was a dedicated caregiver and valued member of our hospital and university communities. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and colleagues during this difficult time."

According to court documents obtained by KDKA, Evans' wife told investigators the attacker used a kitchen knife and struck while the couple slept. The suspect — later identified as 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway — was wearing only underwear and claimed to "be God," she told police.

During the assault, she called out for their two children to flee to a neighbour's house. Her husband addressed the suspect by first name, calling him "Elijah," though she said she did not recognise the intruder.

Detectives later located Hemingway behind a nearby property with lacerations on his hand. He was taken to hospital for treatment before being charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and criminal trespass, the Allegheny County Police Department confirmed.

Allegheny County Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph described the scene to KDKA as "very violent." "The bedroom furniture was broken, mirrors broken. It was a very graphic scene," he said.

Police have not released a motive for the attack.
