Rick Ross faces felony strangulation charge over Star Island incident
Rapper Rick Ross was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at approximately 6:10 am Thursday after voluntarily surrendering to detectives at Miami Beach Police headquarters, the Jamaica Observer reports, citing CBS News. Ross, whose legal name is William Leonard Roberts II, faces one felony count of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanour count of battery.
The alleged incident occurred on August 28 at Ross's Star Island mansion. According to the arrest affidavit cited by CBS News, Ross and the woman had been in a relationship for approximately one year and were living together at the time.
The woman told investigators she was awakened by Ross at around 7:44 am. She alleged he became angry after noticing she had been tagged in an Instagram photo, questioned her about it, and slapped her in the face. The confrontation continued in a bathroom, where she alleged Ross struck her in the chest multiple times and restricted her breathing by grabbing and twisting the collar of her hoodie.
She further alleged that Ross grabbed her by her ponytail and slammed her against a wall before striking her in the face, causing a busted lip. Ross then allegedly pushed her to the floor, turned on the shower and attempted to spray her with the showerhead. She told police she managed to leave the bathroom, gathered her belongings, and left the residence after Ross departed.
A Miami-Dade judge found probable cause in connection with the domestic violence allegations and ordered Ross to have no contact with the alleged victim. He was released from jail Thursday.
Ross has denied the allegations and maintained his innocence.
