Round Lake Beach man charged with murder after fatal Sunday night shooting
A 26-year-old man has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder following a fatal shooting in Round Lake Beach, Illinois, on Sunday evening, lakemchenryscanner.com reports.
Officers from the Round Lake Beach Police Department responded at around 9:30 p.m. to the 1200 block of Sunnyside Court after reports of shots fired. On arrival, they found an adult male lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound.
Paramedics transported the victim, identified Monday by Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek as Kevin Rodriguez-Ruiz, 31, of Round Lake Park, to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy performed Monday confirmed that Rodriguez-Ruiz died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.
Police Chief Ryan Rodriguez identified the suspect as Juan U. Lopez-Aguayo, 26, of Round Lake Beach. Following the shooting, Lopez-Aguayo fled the scene in a 2009 Infiniti. An alert was broadcast to area law enforcement through the Illinois State Police Emergency Radio Network (ISPERN), and officers tracked the vehicle travelling southbound on Interstate 57 near the Champaign area.
Troopers from Illinois State Police Troop 10 stopped Lopez-Aguayo on I-57 near Marion shortly after 3 a.m. Monday and took him into custody.
"With assistance from the Illinois State Police, the suspect was located and taken into custody," Rodriguez said.
At the scene on Sunnyside Court, crime scene tape surrounded a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck stopped in the middle of the street with its doors open. A neighbour told lakemchenryscanner.com she heard approximately five gunshots. Officers and detectives interviewed neighbours, collected physical and digital evidence, and photographed the area around the vehicle. A pair of jeans and shoes were found on the ground beside the Silverado, and a light tower was brought in to assist investigators working through the night.
"This investigation involved multiple interviews with witnesses, and the recovery of numerous items of digital, physical, and firearm related evidence," Rodriguez said.
A preliminary investigation indicated that Rodriguez-Ruiz and Lopez-Aguayo were known to each other, and Rodriguez characterised the incident as isolated.
"Based on the information currently available, authorities believe there is no ongoing threat to the community," he added.
Rodriguez thanked Illinois State Police Troop 10 for their assistance. Lopez-Aguayo was scheduled to appear in First Appearance Court on Tuesday morning.
