Minnesota teacher sentenced for hotel sex with student and supplying alcohol to minors

A special education teacher at Tartan High School in Oakdale, Minnesota, has been sentenced to six months in jail after repeatedly booking hotel rooms to have sex with a teenage student, nypost.com reports.

Ann Margaret Bacon, 27, initially told investigators that she had not begun a sexual relationship with the 18-year-old student until July 2023 — a month after he graduated from the school, located just outside St. Paul. She later changed her account after being confronted with a photograph of the pair together at a hotel.

Records obtained by police showed that Bacon had booked a room at the same hotel on at least four occasions: 8 May, 4 June, 11 June, and over the Fourth of July holiday. On those occasions she also purchased alcohol for other underage students who were present. One piece of evidence cited in the criminal complaint was a $40 Venmo payment she received labelled "liqq."

Two witnesses told investigators that Bacon and the student were known for "acting secretively" around one another, and that one witness had explicit photographs of both on his phone.

The student later told investigators that he and Bacon had been in an exclusive relationship and that he had also stayed at her apartment. Bacon ultimately admitted that the sexual relationship had begun while he was still a student — and that July 2023 was when it ended, not when it started.

Bacon pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a prohibited occupational relationship and was sentenced on Monday. She had been hired as a special education teacher at the school in August 2022 and resigned in February 2024 on the same day she was interviewed by police, according to the Pioneer Press.
