Teenager killed in Arcadia home shooting; suspect shoots himself in Pasadena
A teenage girl was fatally shot inside an Arcadia, California home on Thursday morning after a 20-year-old man she had been dating forced his way in and opened fire, according to abc7.com.
The suspect, named by authorities as Paul Anthony Cruz Jr., fled the scene following the shooting and drove to Pasadena, where he shot himself as officers were preparing to approach him, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a news release.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released her identity.
Arcadia police responded to the 800 block of West Huntington Drive at around 11 a.m. after a caller reported that a man inside a residence had fired a gun. "When officers arrived, the man had fled the scene, and officers discovered a juvenile female suffering from a gunshot wound," the Arcadia Police Department said.
Video footage from the scene showed part of a glass balcony door shattered at the apartment complex as investigators worked the scene.
The second shooting involving Cruz took place approximately one hour later, at South Arroyo Parkway and East Glenarm Street in Pasadena. Crime-scene tape cordoned off a nearby parking lot close to a Petco and other businesses.
Pasadena city spokesperson Lisa Derderian said Cruz died from his self-inflicted gunshot wound after being transported to hospital. However, Los Angeles County sheriff's officials indicated he remained in critical condition, and the precise status of the suspect had not been confirmed at the time of reporting.
Workers at a nearby auto shop told local reporters they heard the shot and went outside to find police approaching a man on the ground.
"We look out the window, there's this guy, he's laying face down on the floor. A couple seconds later, police officers show up and they close off the area," said Michael Amini, manager at Alliance Auto Body Works.
Both the Arcadia and Pasadena police departments were conducting separate investigations into the two shootings.
