Boy, 3, fatally shoots himself with father's Glock at Florida drive-thru
A three-year-old boy shot himself in the face with a handgun and died at a Burger King drive-thru in Bartow, Florida, on Thursday evening, fox13news.com reports, citing the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
According to Sheriff Grady Judd, the family had relocated from Connecticut four months earlier and was attempting to buy dinner when their credit card was declined. The father, distracted while searching for an alternative means of payment, removed a Glock from his waistband and set it on the vehicle seat beside him.
The child, who was playing in the backseat, reached forward, grabbed the firearm and pulled the trigger.
The father heard a loud pop and ran frantically around the vehicle. A bystander called 911, and first responders transported the boy to hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m. Deputies noted he was due to turn four years old in four days.
Detectives have transferred the case file to the State Attorney's Office for evaluation of potential charges. Sheriff Judd stated there is currently no indication that criminal prosecution is being pursued.
