Fatal shooting of toddler at Dallas apartment under investigation

A toddler is dead after being shot at the Oakwood Place Apartments on Wadsworth Drive in South Oak Cliff, Dallas, fox4news.com reports. Officers responded to the complex at around 1am on Sunday and found the child suffering from a gunshot wound inside one of the units.

Dallas police immediately began lifesaving measures while awaiting paramedics. The toddler was transported to hospital but died shortly after arrival.

Investigators are working to establish the sequence of events. Child Protective Services were notified, and the child's mother was taken in for questioning. Police have not yet identified who fired the weapon.

For at least one resident of the complex, the shooting has been hard to process. Neighbour Bernard William Shabad told fox4news.com the death had reignited his frustration with gun violence in the area.

"I never would have thought that it would happen like that. Yeah, real sad. They gotta pay attention to their kids," Shabad said.

He called for stronger action against gun violence. "Take the guns up, put them in the trash to do something, but we all go get killed. Gonna have one of my prayers because that's sad. A little baby got killed by guns," he added.

The investigation is ongoing. Dallas police have not announced any arrests.
