Michael McKee has been arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shootings of Monique Tepe, 39, and her husband Spencer Tepe, 37, a dentist, at their Columbus, Ohio home on 30 December, abcnews.com reports.

McKee, Monique Tepe's former husband, was linked to the killings through neighbourhood surveillance footage that showed a vehicle arriving near the property shortly before the murders and leaving shortly after, according to a complaint filed in Franklin County Municipal Court.

Investigators later traced the vehicle to Rockford, Illinois, where they found evidence placing McKee in possession of it both before and after the killings, the complaint states.

Officers discovered the couple after Spencer Tepe failed to appear at work. Both victims were pronounced dead at 10:11 a.m. Spencer Tepe had sustained multiple gunshot wounds; Monique Tepe had at least one gunshot wound to the chest, according to local ABC affiliate WSYX. Two young children were found unharmed inside the home.

McKee and Monique Tepe had been married in 2015 and divorced in 2017. Divorce records obtained by WSYX indicate the former couple had no children together.

Columbus police said on Saturday that the investigation remains active. "So we do not compromise the active and ongoing case progress, information will be released as appropriate," the department stated.

The Tepe family welcomed the arrest in a written statement. "Today's arrest represents an important step toward justice for Monique and Spencer. Nothing can undo the devastating loss of two lives taken far too soon, but we are grateful to the City of Columbus Police Department, its investigators, and assisting law enforcement community whose tireless efforts helped to capture the person involved," the statement read.

The family added that Monique and Spencer "remain at the centre of our hearts," and that those left behind would continue to "surround and protect the two children they leave behind."

McKee is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
