Argentine court closes $LIBRA case against Milei and sister Karina
Judge Marcelo Martínez de Giorgi dismissed charges against Argentine president and nine other defendants in alleged $LIBRA cryptocurrency fraud case.

$LIBRA case closed: judge rules out fraud and abuse of authority against Milei
Argentine courts have archived charges against president Javier Milei and his sister Karina Milei over alleged fraud linked to the $LIBRA cryptocurrency, according to publico.es. Judge Marcelo Martínez de Giorgi issued the dismissal following a request from prosecutor Eduardo Taiano, who also requested the separation of nine other defendants from the case.
The magistrate concluded that the necessary elements to establish the investigated crimes were not substantiated: fraud, trafficking in influence, abuse of authority and negotiations incompatible with the exercise of public functions.
No legally relevant deception, according to the ruling
Regarding the alleged fraud, the ruling states that no legally relevant deception was identified that would have induced purchasers to acquire the cryptoasset. Nor was a causal relationship established between a possible deceptive scheme and the economic losses suffered following the collapse of its valuation. The ruling concludes that the fall in the price of the token is not sufficient in itself to prove fraud unless it is demonstrated what false information would have led investors to operate.
Regarding Javier Milei, the ruling indicates that "no functional acts or resolutions contrary to the law related to the dissemination of the cryptoasset have been verified". In the case of Karina Milei, the ruling states that it was not proven that she had requested or received money to facilitate meetings between the president and businessmen linked to the project.
Eleven people dismissed in total
The dismissal also covers businessmen Mauricio Novelli, Manuel Terrones Godoy, Sergio Morales, Hayden Mark Davis and Julian Peh, as well as María Alicia Rafaele, María Pía Novelli, Camilo Rodríguez Blanco and Orlando Mellino.
The case originated following a publication by Milei on 14 February 2025 on his X social media account, in which he promoted a project called Viva la Libertad Project and indicated a cryptocurrency address to finance private Argentine ventures. The value of $LIBRA rose rapidly after that message and collapsed hours later, generating losses for thousands of investors and triggering legal complaints both in Argentina and abroad.
Expert reports revealed contracts and parallel conversations
Computer expert reports conducted in November 2025 by the judiciary and released to the local press in March recovered a draft contract from the phone of one of the defendants between Milei and American businessman Hayden Mark Davis—the driving force behind the currency—for approximately five million dollars.
Additionally, more recent expert reports showed that Milei maintained repeated conversations with Mauricio Novelli, an Argentine businessman who introduced the president to Davis, parallel to the launch of $LIBRA.
Background: complaint against prosecutor for misconduct
In March, the commission of the Argentine Congress that investigated the case until November 2025 publicly complained against prosecutor Taiano for "obstruction of investigation" and "possible misconduct". The judicial decision to archive the case closes, for now, the criminal proceedings, although the case file concentrated months of parliamentary and media scrutiny over the president's conduct in relation to the launch of the cryptoasset.
