Court sets 22 December for verdict in Maradona death trial

The Argentine court trying the death of Diego Maradona announced on Thursday that it will deliver its verdict on 22 December 2026 at 12:00 hours (local time), according to eleconomista.com.mx. The decision comes after six months of hearings and closing remarks from Dalma Maradona, the idol's eldest daughter, who called for justice for her father.

"I want to ask you for my father to have the justice he deserves," Dalma stated before the court at the close of hearings held in San Isidro, north of Buenos Aires.

The court president, Alberto Gaig, announced the date with a faltering voice as he brought the sessions to a close.

Maradona died on 25 November 2020 from cardiac and respiratory arrest and pulmonary oedema whilst undergoing home care treatment in Tigre, near San Isidro. He was 60 years old.

Seven healthcare professionals were charged in connection with his death. The prosecution requested prison sentences ranging from 4 to 12 years for six of them. The seventh defendant, doctor Pedro Di Spagna, was acquitted on Thursday after no charges were brought against him.

Leopoldo Luque, the former star's personal physician and principal defendant in the case, also took the stand to reassert his innocence.

In their closing arguments, defence lawyers requested the acquittal of nursing coordinator Mariano Perroni and nurse Ricardo Almirón.
