A Colombian national motorcyclist with a criminal record was detained in pre-trial detention following a police pursuit that lasted more than 30 minutes and covered 20 kilometres across several neighbourhoods in Buenos Aires City, according to a report from mpfciudad.gob.ar.
The incident began on Monday at the intersection of Avenida Juan B. Alberbi and Riglos, in Caballito, when the suspect ran a red light and ignored the flashing lights and sirens emitted by the City Police.
The pursuit, which was entirely recorded on film, crossed through the Microcentre and Communes 1, 3, 4 and 5, and ended at the corner of Carlos Calvo and Quintino Bocayuva, in the Boedo neighbourhood. During the chase, the suspect drove the wrong way down avenues such as Juan B. Alberbi and San Juan, and travelled along a section of the Autopista 25 de Mayo, endangering drivers and pedestrians during heavy traffic.
After losing control, the motorcyclist fell to the ground and attempted to flee on foot, but was overpowered by police officers. The Western Flagrante Offence Unit of the City Public Prosecutor's Office (UFLA Oeste), led by assistant prosecutor Sebastián Corral Galvano, validated the detention.
During the investigation, an operator at the City's Urban Monitoring Centre (CMU) identified the physical features of the detainee, as well as the motorcycle and backpack he was carrying, and established that the same individual had stolen a mobile phone from a woman on a street corner in the Villa Crespo neighbourhood on 4 May. That incident was captured by a camera and reported by a witness who saw the crime and called 911.
With the evidence gathered, assistant prosecutor Corral Galvano requested pre-trial detention, which was ordered by the judge in charge of Criminal Court for Minor Offences and Misdemeanours No. 18, Ricardo Baldomar. The suspect, detained since Monday, will remain in custody while proceedings continue against him for the offences of disobeying authority and robbery.
The accused also faces additional robbery charges before the national courts.
