Fugitive sought since March dies in José C. Paz after gunfire exchange
Joel Dylan Carrizo, alias "Pipo", aged 22, died this Wednesday in the Buenos Aires locality of José C. Paz after exchanging gunfire with police officers and shooting himself in the head, according to tn.com.ar. The young man had a warrant for arrest in force since 6 March for the murder of Alberto Javier Ávalos, an officer with the Federal Penitentiary Service.
The confrontation erupted when officers from the 3rd Police Station of José C. Paz recognised Carrizo during a preventive patrol in the Pichincha and Route 197 area, a few metres from the Concentrador Market. The officers ordered him to stop. The young man refused to be detained, drew a firearm and opened fire against the uniformed officers.
During the gunfire, a Buenos Aires police officer was shot in the leg; the wound was not serious. Carrizo was also wounded and attempted to escape by entering various houses in the neighbourhood. The pursuit ended when he became cornered with no way out. After another exchange of gunfire, he shot himself in the head and died.
At the scene, police seized a Bersa 9-millimetre pistol with the magazine loaded, which was believed to have been used by Carrizo during the confrontation.
After identifying him, investigators confirmed that the arrest warrant had been issued by Guarantee Court No. 6 at the request of Decentralised Prosecution Unit No. 23 of Malvinas Argentinas, as part of a case involving robbery aggravated by the use of a firearm and murder as a means to an end. The investigation into Carrizo's death was assigned to Decentralised Prosecution Unit No. 25 of Malvinas Argentinas, headed by prosecutors Rodrigo Fabián Suárez and Ariel Gustavo Wassouf.
The penitentiary officer's crime, in February
Ávalos was murdered on 14 February at the intersection of Gaspar Campos and Route 197, also in José C. Paz. The officer was travelling on his Honda GLH 150 motorcycle with his stepdaughter when criminals on motorcycles intercepted them at a traffic light and attempted to rob them of the vehicle.
In the struggle that followed, a gunfight broke out. A shot struck Ávalos' body; he was dressed in civilian clothes. The young woman accompanying him was unharmed and told investigators that her stepfather attempted to defend himself with his own weapon before being struck down wounded.
Ávalos was rushed to Mercante Hospital. Although he was admitted conscious, his condition worsened and doctors were unable to revive him. He died from gunshot wounds to the chest.
Since then, the arrest of those responsible had been actively sought. The detention order against Carrizo was issued in March, and the young man remained a fugitive until the confrontation on Wednesday.
