Shooting in José C. Paz: fugitive wanted for prison officer murder commits suicide when cornered

Cornered fugitive shoots himself in the head after gunfight with provincial police

Joel Dylan Carrizo, alias "Pipo", aged 22, died on Wednesday in José C. Paz after shooting himself in the head once cornered by officers of the Buenos Aires Provincial Police, according to infobea.com. The young man had been sought since early in the year for the murder of an officer of the Federal Penitentiary Service.

The confrontation began when personnel from the 3rd Police Station of José C. Paz recognised Carrizo at the intersection of Pichincha and Route 197, metres from the Concentrador Market. The officers, who were conducting a preventive patrol, ordered him to stop. "Pipo" ignored the order, drew a firearm that he was carrying among his clothes, and opened fire on the uniformed officers.

During the gunfight, one officer was wounded in the leg, although the injury was not serious. Carrizo was also hit by a shot and attempted to escape by running through various houses in the neighbourhood. With no way out, he turned to face the police officers again for a few minutes until, seeing himself cornered, he took his own life with a shot to the head.

At the scene, officers seized the 9 mm Bersa pistol with which Carrizo had attacked the officers.

Arrest warrant for robbery and homicide

Once the suspect was identified, investigators confirmed that a detention warrant had been issued by Guarantees Court No. 6 at the request of Decentralised Investigation Unit No. 23 of Malvinas Argentinas, dated 6 March of this year. The case linked him to aggravated robbery through use of a firearm and homicide committed in the course of another crime.

The investigation of the incident was handed over to Decentralised Investigation Unit No. 25 of Malvinas Argentinas, headed by prosecutors Rodrigo Fabián Suárez and Ariel Gustavo Wassouf.

The crime of 14 February

Case sources told infobea.com that "Pipo" was sought for the homicide of Alberto Javier Ávalos, an officer of the Federal Penitentiary Service (SPF) who worked at the Marcos Paz penal institution.

On the night of 14 February, Ávalos was travelling on his Honda GLH 150 motorcycle accompanied by a 26-year-old woman through the intersection of Gaspar Campos and Route 197 when he was intercepted by criminals travelling on a fluorescent green enduro-type motorcycle. The robbers attempted to steal from him. A gunfight then ensued: one of the shots hit Ávalos's body.

The young woman, who was unharmed, told investigators that she was travelling with her stepfather when two armed thieves intercepted them, and that her relative "repelled the attack using his pistol", at which point the confrontation broke out.

Ávalos, who was wearing civilian clothes, was rushed to the Mercante Hospital. He was admitted conscious, but deteriorated and doctors had to perform resuscitation manoeuvres. They were unable to save his life. Healthcare sources told this outlet that the victim had wounds to the thorax with no exit wound and that he died as a result of hypovolemic shock.

Alberto Javier Ávalos was born on 3 March 1979 in Barranqueras, in the province of Chaco, and was residing in the Cuartel V area at the time of his death.
