Refrigerator breakdowns in supermarkets: Federal Prosecutor's Office investigates

Several supermarket chains in Belgium have reported malfunctions in their refrigerators and freezers, according to rtl.be. The exact causes of the incidents remain to be determined, and a cyberattack is among the leads being examined. The Federal Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation.

Interior Minister Bernard Quintin (MR) said on Monday that these disruptions should not lead to shortages on shelves. "The incidents are limited to refrigeration installations in certain stores," he specified, noting that distribution centres had not been affected.

Quintin believes that these events highlight the need to strengthen cybersecurity in the sector and improve businesses' resilience against cyber threats.

The minister recalled that Belgium strengthened its legislative framework in December, with the transposition of the European CER directive, which aims to improve the resilience of critical entities. This legislation now covers the food sector as a whole, from production to distribution.

Bernard Quintin also plans to meet shortly with the retail federation Comeos to examine the measures necessary to protect the infrastructures concerned and ensure the continuity of essential services.
