A 28-year-old police officer who was beaten during Monday's protests at the Celeste station of Mi Teleférico in central La Paz could lose vision in one of his eyes due to the severity of his injuries.
The non-commissioned officer suffered an open eye trauma that was inflicted during the attack. He was transferred to the National Health Fund (Caja Nacional de Salud), where he was admitted on Monday afternoon in delicate condition, according to statements made by doctor María Elena Chambi to Bolivia TV.
Medical centre staff stabilised the officer and scheduled surgical intervention for Tuesday. The specialist indicated that the prognosis regarding his visual capacity would depend on findings during the operation. "He has a high risk of losing vision in one eye," the doctor said following the initial emergency assessment.
The attack was carried out by a group of at least four individuals in the midst of the unrest. The attackers continued beating the police officer even after he had fallen to the ground.
The incidents erupted when organisations linked to the Bolivian Workers' Centre (Central Obrera Boliviana/COB) and Red Ponchos contingents attempted to march towards Murillo Square, which sparked clashes with security forces.
