Bolivia accelerates international cooperation against drug trafficking and organised crime

Key agreements in sectoral meeting against drug trafficking in Bolivia
According to reduno.com.bo, the Vice-Minister of Public Safety, Rodolfo Montero, presented the conclusions of a sectoral meeting held with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and representatives of invited countries, where joint actions were defined to tackle drug trafficking, organised crime and transnational offences.
The main agreement consists of the creation of sectoral meetings that will make it possible to speed up the flow of information between countries and respond more quickly to requirements related to these crimes. "We must strengthen jointly the aspects that refer to the exchange of information," said Montero.
Technological cooperation and training for security forces
The Vice-Minister also reported that collaborating countries will provide technology and specialised training to both the Air Force and the Police. Montero specified, however, that the exact amount of the budget allocated to these actions has not yet been determined.
"The countries that collaborate with us to strengthen us both technologically and with the training of instructors from friendly countries for the personnel of the different forces," he explained.
Domestic public safety plans
At the domestic level, the official mentioned the implementation of programmes such as "Safe Neighbourhood", through which neighbours themselves identify on maps the sectors where they consider greater police presence necessary. The aim is to strengthen surveillance in different areas to prevent criminal acts and improve the population's perception of safety.
"These are plans that we are carrying forward to give better security awareness to all Bolivian citizens," said Montero.
New meeting planned in one month
The Vice-Minister announced that in approximately one month a new meeting will be held to continue adjusting the operations and plans agreed in the framework of the sectoral meeting, with a view to their concrete implementation in the short term.
