Bolivia highlights trinational cooperation following drug seizure in Brazil
The Bolivian presidency characterised as a result of joint effort between La Paz, Brasília and Washington the operation that resulted in the seizure of approximately 50 tonnes of narcotics concealed in planks exported from national territory to the neighbouring Amazonian country.
José Luis Gálvez, speaking on behalf of the Executive, indicated at a press conference that the procedure had the support of the Bolivian Police, the customs authorities of both countries and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. According to his remarks, as reported by eju.tv, the evidence collected is under analysis in laboratories of the three nations involved, following protocols agreed bilaterally.
The government representative took the opportunity to highlight actions undertaken by the current administration during the last six months, asserting that six and a half months of management have made it possible to capture seven drug trafficking leaders who enjoyed impunity. He gave the example of a defendant who, despite having a sentence of more than a century of imprisonment, remained at liberty within the country without significant obstacles.
In his remarks, Gálvez listed the fall of members of Comando Vermelho, of the First Command of the Capital and of Uruguayan Sebastián Marset as evidence of the offensive against organised crime.
Similarly, the official launched criticism against leaders from previous administrations who today question the results, but who—in his view—permitted two decades of illicit growth. "The achievements in these seven months must be confronted against two decades of inaction," he concluded.
The cargo was intercepted on the past Sunday by Brazilian federal and customs agents. The timber pieces came from Bolivia and transported the illegal substance inside. This occurred weeks after Chile detected another similar shipment with more than one hundred tonnes of alkaloids concealed. National prosecutors and officials are investigating the origin of both shipments.
