Bolivian police captured Jhonsson Smith Cruz Torres, alias 'Jhon Pulpo', on Tuesday, identified as leader of the criminal organisation 'Los Pulpos', in an apartment located in a commercial building in La Paz, according to reports from willax.pe.
The general commander of Bolivian police, Augusto Álvarez, confirmed at a press conference that the detention took place as part of an operation called 'Pulpo Dos'. In the same operation, Gabriel Alexander Mendocilla Gómez, 23 years old, was also arrested. Both attempted to escape but were unsuccessful.
Authorities found cash in various currencies at the property. Álvarez also stated that Cruz Torres had aimed to expand the organisation's operations in Bolivia, as he had apparently done previously in Argentina, Chile and Peru.
One of the most striking details of the operation was that 'Jhon Pulpo' had reportedly undergone "various facial surgeries" in order to alter his identity and evade identification by authorities.
Hours after the capture, Bolivia's Ministry of Government issued a resolution through the Migration Directorate to expel Cruz Torres from the country. "On instructions from our government minister, today, through a resolution issued by the Migration Directorate, he is being expelled from our territory and placed in the knowledge of the authorities in the Republic of Peru," the police commander stated.
Colonel Héctor Tarrillo, police attaché at the Peruvian Embassy in Bolivia, recalled that 'Jhon Pulpo' is subject to a life sentence for the crimes of kidnapping, contract killing and extortion. Tarrillo added that the detainee would have a direct link to a recent attack in the city of Trujillo, in which a businessman was kidnapped—and subsequently released—while his four companions were killed inside a van.
