A large police contingent raided the El Abra penitentiary centre to confiscate a series of illegal items that prisoners had accumulated.

A substantial police operation by the departmental command raided the El Abra detention centre in Cochabamba and caught prisoners in possession of a considerable quantity of forbidden goods. The raid, carried out by more than a hundred uniformed officers, allowed authorities to remove approximately two dozen mobile telephone devices, a similar number of sharp or blunt weapons and several packages of illicit substances from the detainees.
The intervention took place without warning. Officers swept through the facilities of the prison and removed all unauthorised material found in the possession of inmates. The seized haul included 25 mobile terminals, 24 blunt or sharp objects and drugs distributed in small packages.
Those responsible for the operation stated that this was not an isolated incident. They announced they would continue with periodic inspections in state penitentiary establishments in order to prevent the use of prison wings as command centres for external crimes, especially illegal extortion through telephone calls, and to reduce violence between factions inside the prison walls.
As a result of what was found, the prison administration will activate internal disciplinary investigations.
