Bolivian peasant leader enters Chonchocoro following charges on five criminal counts
A Bolivian judge ordered the remand of Vicente Salazar, principal authority of the Túpac Katari Peasant Federation, to Chonchocoro prison for six months. The measure was imposed during a bail hearing held following his arrest.
The arrest occurred on Saturday at midday in El Alto, where intelligence officers from the National Police executed an operation to locate him. The leader spent the night in police custody and the following day prosecutors notified him of the charges.
Five offences are being brought against him: incitement to commit offences, criminal association, terrorism, sabotage against the security of transport systems, and attack on the security of state services. An initial charge of financing terrorist activities was ultimately dismissed.
Salazar must remain in detention whilst the stages of the judicial process develop, which involves infractions considered serious against public order and national infrastructure.
