On Tuesday, Juan José Zúñiga, who headed the Army until his dismissal, left San Pedro prison en route to the La Paz Departmental Court of Justice. There, the oral trial linking him to incidents recorded on 26 June 2024 resumed.
The transfer of the former official took place with a significant security operation. He left the prison in chains and protected with a bulletproof vest to appear before the Rose Hall, where the hearing was scheduled to begin at 08:30.
Moments before departing, Zúñiga appeared satisfied with the judges' decision granting him house arrest. "I feel happy," he commented briefly to journalists covering the transfer.
The court ruling establishes that the defendant must comply with the measure at a private residence, but first has three days to justify an address in the city of La Paz, provide an economic guarantee of 200,000 bolivianos and meet the other requirements set. Until he does so, he will remain in San Pedro and be transported to each session of the trial.
The case advances with the gathering of testimony and the incorporation of evidence on what happened on 26 June, a date that the Public Ministry is examining as an alleged conspiracy against constitutional order.
